With a perfectly signposted network of more than 6,000 km of hiking trails, the Thuringian Forest is a walker’s paradise. The best-known trail near Erfurt is certainly the Rennsteig trail, rich in history and tradition. The 168 km-long ridgeway runs through the Thuringian Forest, passing the Nature Park and the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve and going, from west to east, from the Werra River to the Saale. The Barbarossawanderweg, the Goethewanderweg and the Saale-Orla-Wanderweg are also fantastic trails you should try out.
